It’s originally a fond nickname for a woollen beanie. We see a beanie as a symbol of love. It’s not itchy if you’re wearing the right kind!
A good relationship is very much like a woollen garment: it serves to buffer and balance the changing conditions, keeps you warm even once soaked, is fairly low maintenance, enjoys to be aired out in the fresh outdoors.
I’m OK as long as I have wool on!
